Despite being one of Abalach-Re’s offspring, Nanda is one of the most powerful enemies of the Grand Vizier in her own city. She is technically in charge of the Crematory, where she burns the dead of Raam. Her physical similarities to her mother (Nanda does not possess her mother’s immortal youth, so she looks older than the grand vizier) have lent her considerable power despite being technically of the unclean caste. The belief that the grand vizier’s blood children possesses power has never been proven, but most Raamites would rather be safe than sorry.
Because of this belief in her inherent power, Nanda is able to practice magic openly, to a degree. Many believe that the Crematory is powered by powerful elemental magics, for one thing. But it also deflects any suspicions of her involvement in the Veiled Alliance. Raamites associate her supernatural capabilities to blood magic, and they are as of yet unaware that it is a skill that she learned through hard work and study. Indeed, she is the current leader of the Veiled Alliance in Raam.
Why does she try to distance herself from rumors of being a member of the Alliance? Certainly, Abalach-Re’s templars cannot torment the order of preservers as well as their counterparts from the other cities. Perhaps she hopes to endear herself to the Raamites in general – arcane users have never been popular in any city and Raam is no exception. But if the populace believe her to be a sorceress anyway, why should she hide her status? Furthermore, why does she seem to know more than the normal preserver does when it comes to the mysterious, radiant beings known as avangions?
Nanda Shatri is one of the most powerful individuals in Raam, that much is true. So what happens if her mother falls? Will she make a bid for the monarchy?
